Purelements: An Evolution In Dance
,

Kevin A. Joseph and Lakai Worrell – former hip hop dancers – met over 30 years ago at a hip-hop competition in East New York, Brooklyn which is known to be a historically underserved community. Joseph and Worrell used dance as a way to propel themselves out of the environment in which they lived. With hip-hop as their foundation, the duo expanded their dance vocabulary across various disciplines through a mix of studying under professional dancers, training at professional institutions and performing with various dance companies. Over the years, the two have evolved into brilliant dancers, choreographers, and stage artists. Because of their versatility as dancers, the two have worked in film, theater, television and with several prominent individual artists. Highlights of their collective careers include performing at events such as The American Black Film Festival, Lincoln Center Outdoors, VH1 Divas and Live, PBS’s “Black Dance in The 20th Century;” and working with artists such as Savion Glover, Phylicia Rashaad, Lauryn Hill, Ossie Davis and James Stovall to name a few.
