Trauma Recovery

The HigherSelf trauma recovery program connects Newark residents to mental health support that fits who they are — culturally responsive care, peer groups led by people who have been through it, wellness programs for mind and body, and art therapy at The 7 Space. Free or low-cost, like everything we run.

If you need help right now

Call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free and staffed 24 hours a day. If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.

For Newark’s 24/7 crisis and emergency lines, text CRISIS to (888) 893-7838 or open our Emergency Resources page. You do not have to be sure it counts as an emergency to use them.

Who it’s for

Newark residents carrying something heavy — grief, violence, loss, or a hard stretch that has not let up. You do not need a diagnosis, insurance, or the right words for what happened. There is no wrong door: tell us what is going on and we will find the right support with you.

What the program includes

  • Culturally responsive mental health services
  • Peer support groups led by people who have been there
  • Wellness programs for mind and body
  • Art therapy at The 7 Space

How it works

Reach out through the Get Help form or by texting HEALTH to (888) 893-7838. A HigherSelf coordinator follows up and connects you with the support that fits — a counselor, a peer group, a wellness session, or art therapy at The 7 Space, our wellness and trauma recovery center in Newark.

We coordinate directly with our program partners, so you are not repeating the hardest story of your life to a new person every time you ask for help.

What it costs

Free or low-cost. If cost is the reason you have not reached out, reach out anyway and we will work it out with you.
